Review of my latest visit to The Clean Plate in Rayleigh
Posted on 1st April 2017
All over the country very talented people are opening up food businesses which really stand out from the average and this little gem in Rayleigh in Essex is one of them. Run by Juls Robinson and her business partner The Clean Plate is located at 11 London Road, Rayleigh, Essex.
Check out their website at www.thecleanplate.uk
It is a treasure trove for vegetarians, vegans and those wanting to eat dairy free or gluten free food. In fact they so fully understand the importance of issues with Coeliac disease that the entire premises are guaranteed to be gluten free. This can be confusing to some people as was demonstrated recently by a negative review they received complaining that there wasn’t any food for people who wanted to eat gluten!!!! as if eating gluten free was a negative thing. The whole point of this place is that they do not want to offer foods containing gluten. It is their choice and a core part of their business model. It simply means that people suffering from Coeliac Disease or severe gluten intolerances can eat here safely and secure in the knowledge that it is safe for them to do so.
I have eaten here a number of times over the last few months including one evening meal tho they have sadly stopped doing evenings plus brunch and several amazing lunches.
I do not know exactly how they do them but these pizzas are out of this world. The base is made from sweet potato with some kind of gluten free flour added to achieve the right consistency. They are light as a feather yet still substantial enough to fill you up.
Now I may be wrong in that this is mushroom soup looking at the garnish even though I remember it as leek and potato!! My memory is not always so good and it was while ago as it was something my friend ordered way back last year, but apart from the great consistency and fab flavours what struck me was that it was presented in such a great way with so many little extras in the garnish.
Something I have ordered on more than one occasion is their Salmon Fish Fingers, They come beautifully presented on a wooden board with a spicy sweet chilli relish and a salad garnish. Cooked in oats they taste great and I ordered side dish of sweet potato fries which arrived hot and crispy…soooooo good.
The menu is very varied and just that little bit different. I am not too proud to admit that I do not recognise every thing mentioned in the menu but that is part of the fun of eating here you get to try new and different ingredients and the staff are only too happy to explain things to you.
The breakfast pancakes are a popular dish and they even offer the choice of vegan ones or those made from rice flour. Just look at this photo who would think these were vegan ???
Savoury bacon pancakes who could resist these too?
I know that as of today, April 1st, the Clean Plate is launching a new summer menu with lots of fabulous new dishes and smoothies etc. I have been meaning to write this for post ages and thought that having done this now it would be the perfect excuse to go visit again in the next few weeks as if I needed an excuse!!
I need to point out that I have no business relationship with The Clean Plate and this review is my genuine unbiased opinion. As I said in a previous review I am a writer who loves their food or am I a foody who loves their writing, so posting this combines two of my favourite things and lets me tick off something on my to do list as well.
Please go check them out and leave me a comment letting me know what you ate there.
